The effects of marijuana on the developing brain-- by Heather Mayer
Although our brains remain the same size since early childhood, they continue to rapidly develop all the way into adolescence and even early adulthood. During this critical period in development, the cells within our brains called neurons continue to refine connections with each other so that important connections are strengthened and irrelevant connections are eliminated. Recent studies using animal models have given insight into the effects of marijuana on a developing brain and how these effects can persist after development has completed.

Virtual Roundtable: "Fake, Made-up, and Crazy: Discernment and Fact-Checking in the 2020s"
Our sister organization, CLEAR at UC Berkeley, is hosting a roundtable with Dr. Karen Scholthof (Prof. at Texas A&M), who will discuss how much we rely on tacit knowledge (learning by doing) and how much is lost (or never revealed) in the materials and methods of papers. She will touch on the issue of reproducibility in science.
Thursday, October 15th, 4:30-6:00pm via Zoom. Register for link.
Capital Science Communicators (CapSciComm)
Capital Science Communicators (CapSciComm) is an association of science writers and communicators serving California’s Capital Region — Sacramento, Davis, and beyond. As a social and professional network, CapSciComm seeks to connect professionals and students in journalism, public relations, creative, policy, public science, and research. CapSciComm’s goal is to encourage the exchange of ideas and opportunities across all fields that intersect with the need and practice of science communication. Annual dues for students are only $5.00.
Skype a Scientist
Skype a Scientist creates a database of thousands of scientists and helps them connect with teachers, classrooms, groups, and the public all over the globe. Their goal is to give students the opportunity to get to know a real scientist and get the answers to their questions straight from the source.
