Posters for the Public

Posters for the Public will be a poster session for the Davis community in Central Park, and we’re encouraging UC Davis researchers to share their research and engage with the public!

Do you do research at UC Davis, and are you interested in sharing your work with the broader Davis community? If your answer to those questions is an enthusiastic "yes," then Posters for the Public is the event for you!

Posters for the Public is an opportunity to showcase your research, practice your science communication, and connect with the Davis public.

What is the event?

Posters for the Public is a new event from Science Says that aims to bring UC Davis research out of the lab and into the community. We're encouraging all researchers, i.e., undergraduates working on a senior thesis or interning in a lab, graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, staff scientists, etc., to practice their science communications skills and connect with the Davis community by making a poster of your research for a general audience. Never done that before? Don't stress! Science Says will host monthly workshops to guide you through the poster-making process and biweekly office hours for one-on-one feedback.

How do I participate?

Then, start brainstorming and creating your poster. You’ll present it with one other poster at a Wednesday or Saturday Farmers Market for about 2.5 hours as many times as you’d like.

When is it?

We’ve added dates for more flexibility from May 22nd - June 12th. Sign up for the shifts you can attend and we’ll put a schedule together in mid-May.

How do I make a Poster for the Public?

We recommend first deciding what simple idea you want people at the market to take away from your poster. Then build a story around that message and design a simple poster as a visual representation of that story/idea. Often, the idea or project you are most excited about is the easiest and most engaging poster you will create. Keep complex data or jargon to a minimum. Revisit our Elevator Pitch and Storytelling workshop or our Poster Workshop slides for help!

Attend our next event on April 25th at 4:30 in SCC Meeting Room A to get help and work through your poster with other participants and SciSays Leadership or visit our Inks and Insights Office Hours every other Monday at Noon in Walker Hall (Calendar Link). Contact us if you have questions!

Who is paying for the printing?

Science Says!

Is it a Poster Contest?

Yes! All posters will include a link to a simple voting and feedback form. All presenters should encourage people to visit it and vote.

What are the poster guidelines?

  • No larger than 28 x 36
    • Posters may not be reused conference posters
  • Must attend a pre-printing meeting 7 days before your first slot in order for us to print your poster
  • Include a QR code link to the SciSays pages for cited references and the voting link
